There are several theories regarding the origin of the place name. During the Edo period, this area was close to the Sumida River, where oyster shells were used in construction and road paving. It is said that large piles of shells were scattered around, and from this scenery, the area came to be called "Kakigaracho."
Figures Who Shaped History
Many merchants and cultural figures have lived in Kakigaracho since the Edo period. Among them, notable individuals include: Jippeisha Ikkū (十返舎一九),a renowned Edo period writer, is one of the notable figures associated with Kakigaracho. He is best known for his satirical work "Tōkaidōchū Hizakurige," a humorous travelogue that became one of the most popular books of the time.
Additionally, nearby is Suiten-gu Shrine, widely revered as the deity for safe childbirth and fertility. Originally enshrined within the Edo residence of the Kurume domain's Arima family, it was relocated to its current site during the Meiji period. On the 5th of every month, the shrine's festival attracts many visitors for worship.

In fact, Kakigaracho was home to many renowned "restaurants" during the Edo period, making it one of the earliest areas resembling the modern restaurant district. Particularly famous for its dishes like suppon (soft-shelled turtle) and unagi (eel), it became a gathering place for the connoisseurs of Edo's fine cuisine. This culinary culture has been passed down through generations, and even today, the area is home to a number of specialized dining establishments.
